lston is easy to locate from which ever direction you are traveling. Apart from good road links, Alston is only half an hours drive east of Penrith station on the West Coast mainline railway (London Euston). To the east is Hexham station (half an hours drive) which connects with Newcastle Central Station on the East Coast mainline (London Kings Cross). Newcastle International Airport is only 50 minutes drive to the east and Manchester Airport is a relaxed 2 hour drive to the south on the M6 motorway.

From the South East
If you're travelling from the south east turn left at Scotch Corner on the A1 and travel westwards on the A66 until a signpost for Barnard Castle. Turn right and follow the signs for the B6277, Barnard Castle and Middleton-in-Teesdale. When you reach Middleton-in-Teesdale turn left at the junction in the town and keep on the B6277. When you reach Alston (after passing through dramatic countryside) drive down the cobbled main street and turn left at the bottom of the road. The Cumberland Hotel is on the right.

From the South West
If you are traveling from the south west, head north on the M6 until junction 40 (Penrith) -turn right and take the second left on the roundabout heading east. At the next roundabout take the A686 for Alston. The road heads towards the unmistakable hills of the North Pennines. When you head down into Alston Moor after Hartside Pass keep on the road and go over the bridge into Alston. The Cumberland Hotel is a little way along on the left just past the garage.

From Newcastle & the North East
Coming from Newcastle take the A69 to Haydon Bridge, just past Hexham and follow the signs for Alston on the A686. When you reach Alston keep on the same road, do not turn left into the town centre. The Cumberland Hotel is 100yards/30metres along on your right.

From Carlisle & the North West
When traveling from Carlisle follow the A69 towards Brampton. Just before Brampton turn right at the roundabout and keep on the A69. A little way along is the turn off for Alston on your right. Take this road (A689). Keep on the road until you reach Alston/ Turn left at the junction and go over the bridge. The Cumberland Hotel is a little way along on your left just past the garage
